Martek makes continuous investments and improvements to our carbon footprint - Martek is one of only 700 UK companies who have achieved accreditation under the Carbon Smart standard. Of these, 70 and Martek have Silver Status and we are currently working towards gold.
For a number of years, Martek has continuously audited operations with a view to reducing our carbon footprint, both to comply with changing legislation and also meet our obligations to the planet. Our efforts in this area have produced a number of dividends, not least substantial reductions in cost relating to heating and disposal of waste to landfill.
A Biomass Generator has been installed at the production facility to dispose of waste timber products; it produces a clean carbon neutral output which substantially reduces our energy costs for factory space heating. It has also resulted in a massive reduction in the volume of waste, which was previously sent to landfill.
To the extent possible, Martek endeavours to source as many materials as may be possible with a measurable recycled content and we do our best to ensure that the materials that we use have the potential for recycling at the end usable life.
We have embedded a sustainable approach to our work and working environments. Our project managers purchasing team regularly attend trade exhibitions to research and source sustainable products and developments that we can introduce to our business to further improve the way in which we do things.
In 2013 Martek completed works on the greenest public building in the UK - Brent Civic Centre. The project was awarded BREEAM outstanding rating, the highest possible and is the first in its category to have achieved this. Martek had to demonstrate our sustainable approach to construction to Brent Council in order to be appointed as a specialist contractor.
Martek are proud to have been part of this very prestigious project and worked closely with the council's architectural team on the design, manufacture and installation of the specialist joinery elements and furnishings in the public library, customer services centre and a number of other service areas.
Another major project that Martek was involved with was for BW Interiors and the project achieved a silver SKA rating. Located above Green Park tube station Devonshire House is in the heart of Mayfair, the 60,000 sq ft refurbishment was carried out within a busy occupied building and working in conjunction with BWI Martek were responsible for the redevelopment if all the core services within the open plan offices including all of the door sets, luxury toilet facilities, changing rooms & reception area.
