AMC BarcelonaA major Retail development designed by BDP Architects has taken place in Aberdeen. Union Square is the City’s new combined retail, transport and leisure complex which opened its doors to entertain customers on 29th October 2009.

The mall houses more than 60 shops, up to twelve restaurants, a ten screen 2,300 seat Cineworld cinema (the largest in Aberdeen) and a 3-star Jurys Inn hotel with 203 rooms.

Costing £250 million, it is one of the largest city centre shopping developments in the United Kingdom and the second largest in Scotland after Glasgow’s Buchanan Galleries, with a total retail space of 700,000 square feet.

Scope of works for Martek involved the manufacture and installation of all of the customer facing areas from the box office, through to main concession, Ben and Jerry’s Ice cream counter, VIP bar and pick and mix stores.

The concession area has been developed to compliment the unique Cineworld operational style; which places the popcorn and its production center stage in the foyer. Martek has worked very closely with Cine UK since their first opening in Stevenage in 1995.
