The new 512-bed hospital is a £227 million Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project, which is being built for the Maidstone and Tunbridge NHS Trust by Laing O’Rourke.
Patient experience has been the key priority in the design of Pembury Hospital ensuring all patients will have a view of the countryside from their room, flat screen TV’s, solar control glass windows, automatic taps, larger windows, interstitial blinds, light sensors and doors with observational panels.
This PFI project is the first hospital of its kind in the UK providing 100% single room accommodation with en-suite facilities and is creating a great deal of interest throughout the country.
Martek designed, manufactured and installed 114 nursing stations, several feature reception desks and other specialist joinery elements. The final phase included the developing a fold down carer bed for each of the 27 locations in the Paediatric units.
With the emphasis on infection control at the heart of all NHS construction projects, Martek have the capability to manufacture high quality joinery while incorporating antibacterial materials and systems. LG HIMACS was used on all of the top boxes and horizontal surfaces providing a seamless finish.
As part of the last phase in the hospital build, Martek also fitted out the Costa Coffee café in one of the public areas of the main atrium of the new hospital.
