If there’s snow on the ground, it mast be time to jet off somewhere exotic and this year was no exception for Martek’s Derek Galloway and Steve Ivin who joined the Ben & Jerry’s Global Franchise community at their annual conference, which this year was held on the tropical Island of Hispaniola – The Dominican Republic. A great opportunity to meet up with old friends and contacts amongst the many franchisees Martek has worked with over the years and additionally develop further our understanding of the brand and how it is planned to develop during 2010.

As in all previous years, the information fun and enjoyment was mixed with a day of corporate responsibility, when all of the attendees participated in this year’s social mission which involved working with the International Aid Group Habitat for Humanity in the village of Macao, about 20 minutes from the resort. Hundreds helped to paint and repair homes in the area, and build a flood-control wall as a way to demonstrate their social mission commitment.

The trip also provided a once in a life time opportunity to witness first hand the incredible value and contribution that is made to agricultural communities as a result of Fair Trade initiatives. Ben & Jerry’s are committed to the promotion of Fair Trade throughout their supply chain and the visit to a working cacao plantation and co-operative provided proof of the value to local communities.
